I ENJOYED reading Jim Crowley’s opinion (25 June) and was delighted Battaash won for him at Royal Ascot. But I sympathise with the jockeys riding in face masks.
As an NHS nurse for 37 years, not only do I wear my own glasses, but a mask and goggles, too – and I’m used to them. So I can’t imagine what it must be like for a jockey going at speed, finding it hard to breathe with a mask on, goggles getting steamed up and not being able to see clearly where they’re going.
I am an avid fan of racing and have missed going to the races since lockdown, but after my hardest days of caring for patients, I have loved the comments jockeys and trainers have posted on social media. They have kept me sane and I don’t think the racing industry realises how much it has contributed to the wellbeing of people like me.
