DAUGHTER OF HOYS CHAMPION WINS ON DEBUT

-

JEMIMA MAKIN-JONES, eight, has proved a chip off the old block. Following in the footsteps of her mother Annabel – a HOYS champion on show pony legend Cottrell Statement – she and home-produced 10-year-old Welsh section A Wernderris Charlie Fox (pictured), made a winning show ring debut together at British Show Pony Society (BSPS) Area 5. They headed their Heritage first ridden class and mini championship, and stood novice Heritage worker champions.

Harrogate-based Annabel now runs a busy strawberry farm and preserve-making business. “My mother [Jane Makin] and I do everything from the riding to the teaching and all the rubbish stuff in between,” she said.

Former showjumper Marie Lea (née Pugh) is another mother with children currently competing successfully in the show ring. At the UKPH Spring Classic, her daughter Issie,

12, won the RIHS junior small breeds qualifier and her son Charlie, nine, headed the UKPH mini class, both partnering the family’s Team Allen-produced Welsh A Crumpwell Harry Potter. Their sister Kitty, 10, also competes Harry in first ridden classes.

Both children campaign over fences too – but only rustic ones. Charlie has Greendown Flash for cradle stakes, and Issie partners the prolific-winning 133cm worker Coco Bongo.

“This was Charlie’s first show on Harry,” said Marie, who showjumped successfully in junior and young rider ranks, partnering such horses as Vantage and her national young riders champion Hasty Exit.

“The children prefer showing though,” she added.
