HOUSE BEAUTIFUL SAYS...

‘Glass doors and ceiling windows let in plenty of natural daylight to brighten this north-facing space. Pale shades and reflective surfaces add extra sparkle.’

Why did you want to change the kitchen?

Our previous one was a small galley with limited storage. It was cramped to work in and there was nowhere to put a table where we could all sit down and eat together.

What was your starting point for the new design?

I had set my heart on a Shaker kitchen, so we looked at different companies and compared prices. Wren Kitchens took on board our ideas and the quote they gave us was competitive.

Did you get help with the design?

Yes, though I already had a good idea about what I wanted and had done a fair amount of research. I sketched out my ideas for the designer at the showroom and he made up the final plan.

Was there a starting point for the layout?

A large island where I could prepare food and keep an eye on the children while cooking was the most important element that needed to be incorporated. It has two bar stools at one end, where I can work, the dishwasher, a bin with two recycling compartments, and a lot of space to keep the children’s toys!

Any budget constraints?

The kitchen is the heart of our home and we knew that we’d be in here much more than anywhere else in the house, so we

made a decision to spend as much as we needed to – within reason.

What lessons did you learn from the build?

We soon discovered that it’s very important to plan in advance and to meet with the builders on a regular basis to ensure everything can be carefully discussed right down to tiny details, such as where to place sockets and fan extractors. The process turned out to be very quick and efficient, which was great as we wanted to be able to enjoy the new space as soon as possible.

Tell us about your colour scheme

As the back of the house faces north and gets very little sun from September to April, I chose very pale colours to keep the space as bright as possible. They also blend well with the two reception areas that lead off the kitchen.

How do you use the space?

We spend much more time in here as a family now, and it’s a great room for entertaining guests.

Is there something you’re particularly pleased with?

The bifolding doors have made a really big impact on the space. As well as letting in lots of light, they also bring the garden inside – the children love watching the squirrels and birds, while I enjoy being able to see the changing seasons. It’s lovely to have it all on view.
