TIME IT RIGHT
TV’s best known builder and DIY expert Tommy Walsh offers his advice on timing for these projects you could try yourself…
A MORNING OR LESS
Tile bathroom basin splashback This is an easy morning’s DIY task
Fit a roller blind If you don’t need to cut it
to size, this could be done in an hour
Put up a curtain track For a good DIYer, this should take around half a day
Paint a window frame Easy, but preparation is important for a good outcome. Two coats in a day
Erect a shelf Not so straightforward as it must be strong and secure. This medium difficulty task may take half a day or a bit longer
ONE DAY
Add trellis to a fence Fairly simple, but I would make my own from pressure-treated roofing batten for a better, longer-lasting job, saving money to boot
Paint a shed Don’t use traditional paint; instead apply two coats of a good quality colour preservative (Sikkens or Sadolin, for example), which will dry quickly
Repaint a small piece of furniture An easy DIY task; allow two half days so that the two coats of paint have time to dry
Lay vinyl floor tiles Click flooring and selfadhesive vinyl tiles are DIY-able jobs, provided the sub floor is prepared properly
A WEEKEND
Paint interior walls This requires thorough
preparation to ensure a good outcome. Work from the top down – ceilings, walls, woodwork. Apply two coats. You should be able to finish two large rooms in two days
Wallpaper a room Don’t underestimate this challenging DIY task – preparation is crucial
Build a deck An experienced DIYer could
manage this
