KEEPING FIT IN WINTER

Just because it’s dark and cold outside doesn’t mean it’s time to pack up your trainers. Here’s how to maintain the pace all year round

-

When it’s gloomy and wet outside, what gets you off the sofa?

Working out in cooler weather has huge benefits; there’s evidence that you can burn more calories and improve your cardiovascular system, plus you won’t overheat! There’s something I really like about being one of the only people out and about – a 6am run can be exhilarating and you see your home area in a completely different way.

A 6am run sounds like torture! How can the rest of us motivate ourselves?

Something that rarely fails is to tell yourself you’re allowed to stop after 10 minutes if you’re not enjoying it. The thing is, once you get going, 99 times out of 100 you’ll carry on – it’s just a case of getting out there in the first place.

Biggest excuse from clients at this time?

A lot of female clients say they don’t feel safe. I understand that completely, but there’s safety in numbers. Try and find a friend who’s keen, or maybe join a fitness class, team or running club. This will help with motivation as well – if by bunking off you’re letting a friend or team down, you’re less likely to do it.

What’s your advice on running after dark?

Stick to well-lit areas and always wear high-vis clothing, and by this I mean proper, reflective apparel. Ideally, also carry a light – I have a little red flashing light that clips to my T-shirt. There are some apps now, such as Strava, that will track you, so you can let a friend know when you’re going out and they can track your live run. Finally, make sure you take your mobile phone with you, and that it’s fully charged.

What would you suggest for easy and affordable ways to stay fit at home?

I’m a big fan of home circuits, and you can create your own in a small space with just some dumbbells, a step and a yoga mat. There’s also a whole range of apps for training on your own – try Sweat by Kayla Itsines. YouTube has some great home workouts too, but do your research and make sure the videos you choose are by a qualified expert.

Will cutting back on exercise in the winter have much of a negative effect?

Sadly, you’d lose the fitness achieved during summer and autumn. If you value a shapely body, the hard work needs to be done in winter too! Regular exercise keeps your blood pressure in check, your heart healthy, your bones strong and boosts your immune system. It also gives you an endorphin release, so you’ll feel happy and energised, even on the coldest days!
