TELL US HOW IT ALL BEGAN…

I previously worked as a trend forecaster in London, but I relocated to Bruton to start a new life with my husband, who had been living in a neighbouring town. Having not really found a company that I felt suited to, and with past experience of working as a project manager, I was keen to embark on a more creative route. I’d always wanted to work for myself, so I decided to open a shop! I haven’t looked back and can’t imagine my life any other way now.

WHAT’S THE ETHOS BEHIND CARO?

We aim to create enriching experiences that connect and nourish us. As a huge supporter of bricks-and-mortar shops, I believe that the spaces we visit can determine how we feel, giving us the escapism we all need. Not everyone can, or wants, to leave city life, so at

Caro we try to offer a little bit of country air wherever you live.

DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING NEW THAT SHOPPERS CAN LOOK OUT FOR THIS SEASON?

March marks the beginning of spring – a time of rejuvenation, renewal and regrowth. With this in mind, we’re introducing a new brand called Humdakin to the store. They create modern ecocleaning products inspired by Danish shores and forests, in a variety of refreshing fragrances including red seaweed, chamomile and sea buckthorn. We’ll also be hosting a workshop, so you can learn how to make your own household cleaning products that are non-toxic and gentle, but also effective at killing germs.

YOU ALSO HAVE A B&B AND EVENT SPACE…

Our double ensuite room is located in a secluded 18th-century garden house in the centre of Bruton, just a few minutes’ walk from the shop and near the contemporary art gallery Hauser & Wirth. At our adjoining events space, we offer a series of events, exhibitions, retreats and workshops. Last December, we put a new spin on the Christmas ‘spirit’ with a tincture of Vermouth that every event goer could take home with them, as well as offering ideas for modern ways to style the home and door fronts. There was a talk on supporting British Bees too.
