Choosing colours Rustic kitchens work best with natural shades, so think blues, greens, warm greys, neutral taupes and browns, as they evoke a sense of tranquillity and, when paired with homespun finishes, are warm and inviting. Don’t be afraid to mix deep and pale hues together, as different tones are good for highlighting separate zones. For example, use a darker colour in the dining space and a paler one in the kitchen. Alternatively, a dark wall behind your kitchen cabinets will create a fantastic contrast, but ensure the room feels balanced by adding darker-toned art or accessories in other areas. The beautiful green on the wall of the Telfords’ kitchen is a dramatic statement, but paired with the paler hues of the floor and brick finishes, it doesn’t overwhelm. The green shades follow through the scheme in the natural foliage and the pendant light fittings, so the whole look feels cohesive.

Finishes Wood is perfect for a rustic look, as the natural variations in tone and texture give a unique finish. As well as using it for cabinets or as a worksurface, you could have it as a feature wall. However, you need to put some effort into protecting it and keeping it looking good. Brick walls are synonymous with rusticity and add character, but if you don’t have one, there are alternatives. Brick slips are made of strips of real brick that have been applied to a backing surface to create a ‘veneer’; they’re easy to fit and cost-effective. Or, for a cheaper alternative that can easily be changed, try a brick wallpaper.

Accessorise Reclaimed and vintage pieces work well in rustic kitchens, so include any favourite items you already own, or have a look at Vinterior or on Ebay.
