YOU ARE WHAT – AND WHERE – YOU EAT
The kitchen is the heart of the home and, as such, it supports our health and wellbeing in many ways; it’s where we socialise and nourish ourselves. It can be a place of relaxation looking out over the garden with a cup of tea or glass of wine; or invigoration - brewing a pot of coffee in the morning. So it’s important we design them to be adaptable, healthy and inviting. Here are things to think about: Flexible lighting As well as task lighting for meal preparation, we should consider how we can use lighting to create the right ambience at different times of the day: natural light for that morning ‘photon shower’, and adjustable brightness for either a sociable or romantic feel. Windows should be clean to let in as much sunlight as possible, with unobstructed views onto whatever greenery is available outside. Fragrance and fresh air The smell of dinner is warm and welcoming but generally not one that should linger. Ventilation and extractor fans can go a long way towards minimising cooking smells. Ventilation aids health and wellbeing too, with toxins from items such as cleaning products quickly dissipated – although I’d recommend natural products where possible. Meanwhile, fragrant plants such as lavender or basil can be a great way to introduce natural scents, as well as a connection to nature. Or go one step further with a herb-filled green wall or home hydroponic system (a way of growing plants in a water-based, nutrient-rich solution).
Clean surfaces We may find anti-bacterial cleansers become less efficient in the future. Consider installing antimicrobial surfaces, fixtures and fittings – such as brass and bronze – that prevent the spread of bacteria, .
Stay hydrated to help boost energy and improve focus. Having counter-top filter jugs might remind us to drink that extra glass of water. You may also want to install a filter to ensure your tap water is as healthy as it can be.
Socialising and sharing The kitchen is where loved ones come together. It’s so important for our wellbeing that we feel a sense of community, belonging and love to enable us to reach our full potential; it plays a key role in determining our health. Think of ways to make your kitchen as sociable as possible – with comfortable seating, for example. Research shows the secret to happiness is the formation of strong bonds with friends and family – so where better to create those moments than in the kitchen?
