A CREATIVE GARDEN RETREAT

-

Recycled and vintage elements come together in a wonderful garden hideaway

A brick path leads to a wooden decked area in front of this delightfully rustic garden workspace. It’s a creative hub designed and built by photographic stylist Rose Hammick and her architect husband Andrew. The space is larger than it appears from outside and is variously used as a photographic location, a teenage hang-out and a screening room (there’s a hidden projector and pull-down screen tucked away in the eaves). There is even enough room for a large desk here – the perfect place to sit and await creative inspiration.

It took the couple more than two years to complete the build.

The large reclaimed metal windows and doors originally came from a factory and Rose sourced them via a salvage dealer. The interior

of the cabin is clad with reclaimed boards that the couple recycled from more than a hundred pallets – a true labour of love!

Outside, Rose has used a dense array of country garden-style plants to soften the black-stained wooden structure and provide a sense of separation from the house. Not an inch has been wasted here – on the decking, plant pots vie for space alongside a small tree in a vintage tub. At night, solar-powered festoon lights and tealights in metal lanterns illuminate the path and steps that lead up to the cabin. Salvaged materials, such as the ones used here, lend themselves perfectly to garden structures – not only are they visually attractive, but they are ecofriendly and often cost less too.

MODERN RUSTIC

Mark and Sally Bailey have used their signature unfussy style to kit out the interior of their showman’s van. Natural wood floorboards are combined with crisp white tongue-and-groove panelled walls, simple linen textiles and artisan ceramics

The exterior of the van is an appealing shade of olive green

ROOM MATES

The sleeping area of the van features two single beds positioned under the window. A vintage tea chest serves as a bedside table, home to a fan and a cool drink in the summer months. Toes are kept warm in winter by the woodburning stove, which is also used for cooking and making hot drinks. Handy wall hooks forgo the need for a bulky wardrobe
