A TRADITIONAL SHEPHERDS’ HUT

A lovely bolthole tucked away in the corner of the garden

No longer reserved only for shepherds, these huts have hit the mainstream, making them a much-sought-after garden accessory. Originally used by shepherds who needed to spend night after night in the fields during lambing season, these wagons were built on strong axles with cast-iron wheels so they could be towed from field to field, and feature small windows to allow the shepherd to keep an eye on his flock. Finding the genuine article is rare these days, but there are plenty of artisan makers creating bespoke replicas.

Shepherds’ huts can be used for all manner of activities, from painting studios to guest bedrooms and pretty much anything else. This traditional-style hut owned by Sophie Bateman was built by Roundhill Shepherd Huts, a family business located in West Sussex. It’s positioned next to Sophie’s vegetable plot in the corner of her gorgeous English country garden. The exterior is clad with painted corrugated iron and it sits on a wooden base on its signature big cast-iron wheels. Sophie has decorated the interior with vintage flair. Reclaimed wooden flooring has been finished with a light limewash, while the vintage French sofa is dressed with a faded floral eiderdown and cushions in natural linen. It’s quite roomy – Sophie has even managed to fit in an upright piano, plus a corner stove that heats the space on chilly days.

CALM AND COLLECTED

The interior of Sophie’s shepherds’ hut combines muted tones with vintage finds. Walls are painted in Great White from Farrow & Ball and offer a simple backdrop for a glazed cupboard and upright piano. Sophie’s desk has a vintage wood tabletop with foldaway legs. The entire design has a serene, restful feel, making it the perfect garden retreat – a place to get away from it all
