FIND THE PERFECT SHADE OF WHITE
‘Nowadays, we understand white paints to be more complex than just pure white,’ explains Patrick O’Donnell, brand ambassador and colour expert at Farrow & Ball, ‘The best way to select your white is by finding the undertone that suits your style, home and, most importantly, the light aspect of your room.’ Patrick advises…
1
Yellow-based whites will lift a north-facing room, whereas cooler whites with a blue or green undertone are ideal for east-facing spaces. South-facing rooms are easiest to design for as they have the
most natural light – you might like a cool white to balance the warmth of the south-facing light. White with red-based undertones will work well in a west-facing location.
2
Consider the materials in your room too. Warm wooden furniture and rich fabrics will benefit from softer, warmer whites. To tone down yellow woods, try earthy whites. It’s a good idea to create moodboards to see the components of your scheme in one place – this will help you visualise the end result.
3
Layering tones of white can create a successful scheme, especially if they’re from a tonally similar family. Historically, whites and neutrals were the only choices for interiors, as colours were expensive and used solely for grand houses!
4
Slightly grey or pure whites work well for contemporary interiors, while period properties will benefit from a more knocked-back white that contains noticeable undertones.
