Traditional looks have been given a characterful update in this family space

How did you start your renovation? Although the room was old-fashioned, we did like certain elements, such as the rolltop bath and wood-panelled walls. We decided to get creative with what we had and found small changes can make a big difference!

How did you want the room to look?

The aim was to maintain a traditional feel that fitted a Victorian property, but to give the space a sense of fun and drama by using bold colours and a statement wallpaper to inject personality.

Who carried out the work?

With budget being an issue, we decided to tackle it ourselves. Nick did most of the work, teaching himself by watching online tutorials.

The original floorboards were sanded back and stained a dark colour, which instantly changed the feel of the room. We fitted a pedestal sink in a heritage style and replaced the towel rail with a cast-iron radiator beneath the original sash-and-case window.

The bath is a standout colour…

Yes, it looks completely different now! I was inspired to transform it by some pictures I saw on Pinterest and Instagram. The wallpaper features a candy pink tone, so I decided to pick that out and match it to a paint I used for the outside and claw feet. It was a really enjoyable process.

Did you face any challenges with the work?

It all went quite smoothly. We focused all our energy on the project over a three-week period and kept going until it was finished. I would say sanding back and staining the original wooden flooring was a big and messy job and with hindsight it would have been easier and more practical to tile the floor.

Are you happy with how it turned out?

We are delighted with the results. Our tight budget meant we worked with what we had, and with surprisingly good results. We now have the fun, family bathroom we wanted, and all enjoy spending time in there!
