It’s well-known that giraffes evolved long necks to reach high-up food, but there could be another possible explanatio­n: to keep cool. Scientists argue that if a giraffe faces the Sun — as they have been seen to do during the day — their necks cast most of their body in shadow. This gives them a crucial advantage in hot habitats.
