Who performed the first spacewalk?
Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov conducted the first spacewalk, lasting 12 minutes, on the 1965 Voskhod 2 mission. It was almost a disaster: in the vacuum of space Leonov’s space suit inflated like a balloon, making it impossible for him to fit through the airlock back into his space capsule. With only minutes to spare, Leonov let some air out from his suit, risking decompression sickness but deflating it enough to squeeze into the airlock alive.
