Service for the parents of stillborn babies held

-

THE festive season can be a particularly difficult time for bereaved parents and their families.

That’s why a Huddersfield charity is once again organising a Lights of Love Service to remember loved ones no longer with us.

The service, to be held at St Thomas’s Church in Manchester Road, is one of 13 remembrance services across the UK being held by the stillbirth and neonatal death charity Sands.

The services are aimed at parents, family and friends of those whose baby has died.

The Huddersfield event takes place on Friday, December 9 at 7.30pm.

It has been organised by the local branch of Sands, which meets at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

The non-denominational, family friendly evening will feature traditional carols, inspirational readings and beautiful musical performances.

Dr Clea Harmer, chief executive of Sands, said: “The death of a baby or loved one is difficult at any time of the year. At Christmas, with so much emphasis on children and families sharing happy times together, the feelings of grief can often seem overwhelming.

“The welcoming atmosphere of St Thomas’ provides the perfect setting for a candlelit service and an opportunity of peace and reflection to remember loved ones who are no longer with us.”

There is no charge to attend the event and no fee to book.

The service is open to anyone of any religious belief or none, and children are welcome to attend.

Those attending the service will be able to add a special message in memory of their son or daughter to a handmade tag to hang on the ‘Lights of Love’ Christmas tree.

Sadly, thousands of babies die each year in the UK.

In 2015, 15 babies were stillborn or died within the first four weeks of life every day, shattering the lives of expectant parents, their families and friends, and the people who cared for them.
