Scrambling Silvesters among the honours at end of campaign

-

THERE was success at the double for Holmfirth’s Silvester family as the scrambling season came to a close.

The third generation of the scrambling dynasty, 10-year-old Charlie, has topped the White Rose MVX 65 class in the championship in his age group.

Charlie is aiming to follow in the footsteps of his father Keith, who is still competing in national Over 50s events and who bagged plenty of silverware back in the 1980s and 1990s, his 80-year-old grandfather Terry, a five-time Yorkshire county champion, and uncle Mark, who was National Veterans Champion in 2006-2007.

Mark has himself enjoyed a very successful season, having finished third overall in the National Twinshock Championship.

Charlie came close to claiming a second trophy as HUDDERSFIELD Falcon rider Andrew Jackson topped the Over 40s rankings at the Wetherby DMC Presidents Trial.

The event at Fellbeck provided some testing conditions after the heavy rains followed by snow and ice in Nidderdale.

Falcon’s Jackson and Fewston electrician James Noble were in strong form, with the Huddersfield club rider losing just one point to Noble’s two.

However, Harrogate Beta dealer Joel Sadler stole the show as he cruised through the Presidents Trophy Trial sections without incurring a single penalty to top the novice rankings.

Huddersfield Falcon MCC stage their penultimate trial of the year on Sunday at Cophurst Moor.

The event is the 10th and final event in the club’s championship series and the start time is 11am. he scored 536 points in the White Rose campaign, and lost out by just four points in the overall category for the top scorer in all age groups and sections.

The youngster is looking to make a step up for next year’s championship to the 85 class.

The club have a final date for the year at New Mill on December 30, commencing at 11am.

Long-serving Falcon member Simon Tyas is recovering well after recently suffering a heart attack.

Tyas compiles the Falcon report and photographer Barry Robinson said: “Simon and his father Bob are long-standing members of the Falcon club and Simon compiles the event reports in great detail.

“His reports are grounded on a background of trialling and organising. His ‘on the spot’ knowledge is invaluable to the Huddersfield Falcon Motor Cycle Club.” 1 Joel Sadler (Beta) 0, 2 Sam Jennings (Montesa) 3, 3 John Lydamore (Beta) 3, 4 Rob Bratley (Sherco) 5, 5 Paul Jackson (Montesa) 11. 1 Andrew Jackson (Scorpa) 1, 2 James Noble (Gas Gas) 2, 3 Martin Wilson (Sherco) 6, 4 Paul Gravestock (Scorpa) 11, 5 Robert Hardisty (Sherco 14. HUDDERSFIELD racer Tom Sykes is confident the Kawasaki Racing Team will be in good shape for the start of the World Superbike Championship next year.

The 2013 world champion Sykes and KRT teammate Jonathan Rea completed their final tests of 2016 at Jerez as they look towards next season’s opening round at Australia’s Phillip Island between February 24-26.

Rea and Sykes set impressive lap times as they shared the circuit with some of their main 2017 rivals and several top MotoGP riders.

Riding the 2017 specification Ninja ZX-10RR, Rea set the fastest individual lap time of the tests, with Sykes the third fastest World Superbikes rider and the fifth fastest rider overall.

Sykes said: “During the Aragon tests and also at Jerez I feel we have been doing good work. We have still not hit the nail on the head but the good thing is we are doing a lot of trial and elimination.

“At Jerez we managed to put in good lap times. Both myself and Jonathan seem to be able to do consistent lap times, which is promising.

“I had a crash that stopped me using my preferred machine, but still we were able to continue testing.

“We know we can do what is required on whatever set-up we have.

“I am confident that with the information we now have we can put the jigsaw together in January and start testing again for the new season from there.”
