Phillip’s rare glimpse into the life of Prince Philip W

-

E’VE already seen Ant and Dec meet Prince Charles, so someone at ITV has obviously decided that following around a member of the royal family does rather well for ratings.

Now Phillip Schofield has been put forward to talk to HRH The Duke of Edinburgh in the 60th Anniversary year of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE).

What’s next? When Holly Willoughby met the Queen? When Keith Lemon met the corgis?

We’re not expecting any hard-nosed interview here, and ‘Schofe’ has revealed that he was warned not to upset the Prince.

“They warn you, ‘Don’t say that because you’ll make him cross’, so it is a bit of a dance,” he said.

However, it is a rare insight into the life of a man who Schofield describes as remarkable, a man who remembers everything and is very spritely and sharp.

Of course, there will be much discussion of the work of the Duke of Edinburgh charity, looking back on the early days and how it supports the development of young people all over the world.

The Duke of Edinburgh reflects on how he set it up in 1956, and Schofield talks to the Earl and Countess of Wessex about the global reach of the DofE, as well as their own roles in the charity.

Schofield also gets the chance to attend a special Gold Award Presentation in the garden at Buckingham Palace.

And he gets into the spirit of things by doing a wing walk as a special one-time only Diamond Challenge for the anniversary.

“It was incredible, just exhilarating,” he says. “And it’s quite extraordinary how much skin there is on my face when you watch it up close and flapping in the wind!”
