Sterling fires winner as City battle back

-

RAHEEM STERLING scored a second-half winner as Manchester City came from a goal down to defeat Arsenal 2-1 at Etihad Stadium.

The result takes City up to second in the Premier League table, although Liverpool could retake that spot if they win at Everton tonight.

The Gunners, who replace City in fourth place, took the lead after only five minutes when Theo Walcott took advantage of lax defending to slot in from Alexis Sanchez’s pass.

City were much improved after the break and equalised when Leroy Sane sprang the offside trap, sprinted into the area and fired past Petr Cech.

And in the 71st minute Kevin De Bruyne played a sublime cross-field pass to Sterling, who pushed the ball past defender Nacho Monreal and finished low beyond the Arsenal goalkeeper.

Danny Rose scored the winner as Tottenham controversially came from behind to beat lowly Burnley 2-1.

Substitute Moussa Sissoko was given only a yellow card for a high, late challenge on Stephen Ward, before putting Rose through on goal in the next move, as the full-back smashed home at the near post.

Spurs were punished for a sloppy start as they failed to clear the ball, allowing Ashley Barnes to poke in the opener.

Prior to the goal, Dele Alli had struck the post from close range, before the midfielder restored parity by converting Kyle Walker’s low cross.

Jay Rodriguez’s brace fired Southampton to their first away victory in since September in a convincing 3-1 win at Bournemouth.

The 27-year-old’s fine double backed up a smart Ryan Bertrand strike as Saints rallied from Nathan Ake’s opener to steal the south coast bragging rights.

On Saturday Chelsea strengthened their grip at the top of the Premier League as they claimed a 1-0 win at Crystal Palace.

Diego Costa headed his 13th goal of the season from Cesar Azpilicueta’s cross in the 44th minute to move Antonio Conte’s side well clear of nearest rivals Liverpool and Arsenal.

The win equalled a club-record run of 11 consecutive league victories - a run which stretches back to the 2009/10 season.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s double moved Manchester United level on points with fifth-placed Tottenham after a 2-0 win at West Brom.

Ten-man Leicester came from two goals down to seal a dramatic 2-2 draw at the bet365 Stadium.

Jamie Vardy was shown a straight red card in the 28th minute by referee Craig Pawson for a two-footed challenge on Mame Biram Diouf.

Alvaro Negredo scored twice as Middlesbrough claimed a 3-0 win over struggling Swansea.

Mark Noble scored his second penalty in successive games as West Ham beat Hull 1-0.
