Monk takes the blame for Leeds’ cup exit

-

MATCH-WINNER Jamie Collins is hoping for a trip to Old Trafford or the Emirates Stadium after helping nonleague Sutton dump Leeds United out of the FA Cup.

The defender converted from the penalty spot in the 53rd minute following Lewie Coyle’s foul on Roarie Deacon to give the National League side a 1-0 victory over the Championship high-flyers and a place in the fifth round for the first time in the club’s history.

Leeds, who fielded a muchchanged line-up, played the final eight minutes with 10 men after defender Liam Cooper was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Collins said: “It’ll be a big upset out in the public but for us we knew we could do it.

“I think we’d like one of the Premier League big boys now – Man United, Arsenal, someone like that, away.”

Garry Monk felt he may have made errors in his team selection and admitted Sutton deserved their victory. The Leeds boss now wants his players to immediately turn their attentions back to pushing for promotion.

“I take responsibility for this performance,” he said. “I’m the one that selected the team, I’m the one that made a lot of changes, it didn’t work out for us. So maybe it was the wrong decision in that sense.

“The bigger picture for us is we have to move on, we’ve got a game in a couple of days (away at Blackburn). We have to refocus straight away and make sure that we’re ready for the next game.”

Bastian Schweinsteiger marked his first Manchester United start for a year with a goal and an assist in a convincing 4-0 cup win over Wigan.

Marouane Fellaini got on the end of Schweinsteiger’s cross to put the holders in front just before half-time in this fourth-round tie.

Chris Smalling made it 2-0 following a cross from Anthony Martial, who set up Henrikh Mkhitaryan to tap in the third.

Schweinsteiger completed the scoring with an overhead kick from close range.

League One Millwall recorded a 1-0 home victory over Watford that took them into the fifth round.

Another convincing performance was finally rewarded with the goal it deserved when Steve Morison’s late, close-range finish ensured Watford became the second Premier League team the hosts have eliminated this season.

Fulham reached the fifth round for the first time since 2010-11 after a 4-1 win over Premier League side Hull.

On Saturday Vanarama National League side Lincoln pulled off another FA Cup shock as they knocked Championship leaders Brighton out with a 3-1 win at Sincil Bank.

Tottenham needed two late goals to beat League Two Wycombe 4-3 at White Hart Lane, while Liverpool lost 2-1 at home to Wolves.

Former Huddersfield Town keeper Matt Glennon is coming out of retirement – for one afternoon only.

The 38-year-old, who now watches Town as a radio pundit, will play for AFC Emley in next Saturday’s big Northern Counties East League clash with Brigg Town at the Fantastic Media Welfare Ground.

The First Division promotion chasers are without regular stopper Graham McLachlan because of suspension. Glennon made 122 Town appearances between June 2006 and January 2010.
