Doctors, doctors... give me the news C

-

UTTING through the hype and health claims, this crack team of doctors promises to answer our questions and tell us the “findings, not the fads”.

Striding along Reservoir Dogs style, the five medics walk with purpose as this documentary begins – they would clearly quite like matching superhero costumes. Perhaps next series.

They are on a mission to get to the bottom of many confusing health reports, to see whether a little research or an experiment can provide answers.

“When it comes to our health, it seems everyone has an opinion and everyone has an agenda. But what’s the health advice you can really trust?” asks Michael Mosley, who is joined by Chris van Tulleken, Saleyha Ahsan, Zoe Williams and Gabriel Weston.

First, Michael seeks out volunteers to see if diet or exercise is the best way to keep calories in check. There is a fear that exercise makes you hungrier, defeating the purpose – but is it true?

Some hungry volunteers start running around a track, while the others sloth about playing games. But which group will want to eat more?

Meanwhile, Chris investigates the wonderful claim that red wine is actually quite virtuous. Pouring himself “just one more glass” of plonk (in the name of research, obviously), Chris asks if red wine is good for us? Fingers crossed.

Elsewhere, Zoe gives four unwitting students a screaming baby doll for a night to see if lack of sleep affects their appetite. I’m fairly sure it will make them pretty moody, if nothing else.

Saleyha finds out whether probiotic products really can improve our health.

And, in incredible footage, Gabriel witnesses a UK first, as a patient undergoes an operation to implant a 3-D printed titanium sternum. TOYAH has a big decision to make, but first she has to deal with Peter, who is none too impressed that she kept her IVF attempts a secret from him.

Wondering what other lies she has told him, Peter storms off. And later, there’s temptation in the form of another woman. Will he cheat on Toyah?

Meanwhile, Anna seeks some advice about making a personal injury claim against David Platt.

Elsewhere, Jenny has a bright idea for a business. THE race to nail the Attahs rattles ahead at breakneck speed. It’s always a struggle to keep up with the plot of this drama at the best of times, so you’ll need to focus.

Viv (Joanna Scanlan) is off on her own, trying to glean some crucial evidence from the son of the formidable trafficker Nora. But it ends with her, Dinah (Elaine Cassidy) and Joy (Alexandra Roach) all becoming a bit suspicious of what the other is up to.

So it doesn’t help when Viv, rather recklessly, forces mouthy Donna Calvert to infiltrate the Attah gang.

The bolshy DI reckons she finally has what she needs to arrest gangster Manni Attah, until she falls into a trap. Ah, the wonderful benefit of hindsight would have been a great thing.

Meanwhile, in another plot line, a sideshow to the main baddie chasing, a peaceful staff protest at an abortion clinic takes an unexpected turn.

Dinah heads off to investigate and events quickly spiral out of control, leading to another shocking case to crack.
