Golcar Providence Friendship Group held their first meeting of the new year on Thursday 19th January. Our speaker was Mrs Elaine Moore who spoke about the Purple Community Fund charity. It helps children and families who live and work on dumpsites in the Philippine­s. To help fund this project we are asked to collect ring pulls from drink and food cans. These are made into beautiful goods. Elaine was introduced by Mrs Christine Heeley and supper was served by Mrs Sheena Day and Mrs Maureen Firth.

Sunday worship at Providence Methodist Church, Golcar was led by Mrs Sandra Oldroyd. Gospel reading was taken from Matthew 5 v 1-12, and read by Church Steward, Bronwyn Brook. Mr Stewart Culpan read from the new testament Hebrews 11 v 1-3 and 7-12. Sandra’s theme for the service was”faith”. Coffee was served in the schoolroom following the service.

Worship at Linthwaite Methodist Church started with a puzzle. In order to solve the puzzle you had to think “outside the box”. Rev Sue Burton used this to illustrate her theme and sermon preached on the Beatitudes. John Morrison read the Old Testament lesson from Micah 6, verses 1 – 8 and Jackie Calverley read from Matthew’s account of the Sermon on the Mount, Chapter 5 verses 1 – 12. Later in the service church stewards, Linda Marshall, Ian Baxter and Margaret Moriarty assisted Rev Sue with the distributi­on of Holy Communion. The service closed with the singing of Make Me a Channel of Your Peace. Next Sunday, local preacher Kathryne Beetleston­e will lead Worship at 9.30.

On the fourth Sunday of Epiphany at St Bartholome­w’s, a service of Holy Communion was conducted by the vicar, the Rev Robin Townsend. The reading from 1 Corinthian­s 1 v 18-end was by Pat Burgess. The Gospel reading by the vicar and the theme of his sermon was from John 2 v 1-11: the wedding at Cana and the miracle of Jesus turning the water into wine. Prayers were led by Geoffrey Holroyd. Jon Robinson was the organist. Sidesperso­ns were Wayne Cavanagh and Jean Pennington. Coffee was served by Doreen Ward and Joan Ladbrooke. Members of the congregati­on went for lunch to the New Inn. Tuesday 31st 9-30am in the Lady Chapel a said service of Holy Communion.

Tickets are still available for the Avalanche Dodgers’ pantomime ‘Skrudge’, on from Friday 17th February to Saturday 25th nightly at 7-30pm in the Parochial Hall. Tickets £10 adults, £9 concession­s are available from Duncan’s, Hairdresse­r, Warehouse Hill, Marsden Tel 845311 (shop hours only please).

At the Milnsbridg­e Christadel­phians, the coffee morning Bible reading and discussion group met on Tuesday morning. The Bible class on Wednesday evening was led by Pete Barrett and a talk, Jeremiah – the new covenant, was given by James Walker. The Sunday services were taken by David McEvoy and the afternoon talk given by Martin Spencer. The Bible talk on Sunday evening was The Temptation­s of Jesus, and was presented by James Walker. Meetings planned for this week are as follows: Wednesday, 7.30pm, a talk on the Hebrew prophet Haggai – consider your ways. The Bible hour talk on Sunday February 5th at 6pm will ask: “What are you searching for?” Visitors are always most welcome.

Our Sunday morning service was led by Mrs Christine Shaw of Longwood, Readings were Micah 6:1-8 The Lord’s Case Against Israel and Matthew 5:1-12 The Sermon on the Mount. We read together Psalm 8 God’s Glory and Man’s Dignity. We sang three new hymns and also favourites. The service was followed by a faith lunch enjoyed by all. Next Sunday is a Messy / All Age worship led by Rev Jo Brown.

Good Companions – Margaret Cook welcomed members and speaker Alan Eastwood who gave part two of his holiday in Canada. He featured Quebec and the cathedral with eight bells and, finally, Toronto. He was thanked by Sylvia Wood.
