Easing aches of old age where care stands proud

-

OLD age creeps slowly and surely into our lives. It begins with the realisation that one cannot reach that forbidden delicacy as easily as yesterday or that extra marathon is just not on.

Old age is frightening for many as they struggle with today’s problems as new age takes shape.

It is a mobile age in which the mobile phone takes over as medical science ensures that the lucky few who escape the groans and aches can at least enjoy ‘mature life.’

Medical science has progressed and added a few more years to life’s expectancy – many a healthy men and women are entering their 80s and 90s and yet a problem is created, hospitals are having to cope with the new age, plus there is not enough beds or care available and so the term ‘bed blocks’ is introduced!

Now the NHS and local social services are merging and funding homes where patients needing that extra care can be treated. The system frees the hospital beds and gives hospitals a breathing space from the relentless pressures facing them during winter.

One purpose-built unit, Moorlands Grange at Netherton, Huddersfield, has achieved top marks for its excellence in care, after a visit from the Care Quality Commission.

It operates, almost like the village hospitals, with doctors and other medical staff regularly available if required.

A good physio clinic helps worn limbs regain some suppleness and there are exercise classes.

Patients, many of whom have had weeks in hospital are encouraged, with the help of carers to make their first steps to recovery and it’s a tough task with the old folk trying their best to overcome their aches and pains.

The system is hard and is often regarded as lacking in care, but Moorlands Grange strives to achieve a favourable outcome.
