Mellor has what it takes for top flight

reverse to Salford Red Devils, with Giants chief Rick Stone impressed with what the youngster has to offer.

And asked if Mellor is already proving he’s a Super League player, Stone replied:

“Yes, he is. That would be a fair comment,” said the experienced Australia.

“In the last two weeks he’s been good for us.

“His yardage carries have been good, he finished off a couple of tries against Salford and also found a couple of neat passes.

“And, personally, I’m happy for Alex.

“He’s a really nice young man, who’s come here to try and prove himself at the higher level, and is doing just that.”

Mellor was clearly one of Huddersfield’s top performers against Salford, although 21-year-old hooker Kruise Leeming was judged by many to be the Giants’ best on the night – with Stone knowing there are many more star performances to come from the former Siddal junior.

“Kruise was good the other night,” added Stone.

“He kept his game a bit simpler than he did at Widnes the week before.

“There are times when he tries to overplay things a bit, but against Salford he played direct by running with the ball, and one thing he does to good effect is run with the ball.

“He also used his footwork the other night, and won us a couple of play-the-balls and caused some damage down the middle.

“There’s no question he’s a player on the up and will get more gametime as we go along.

“And when he realises how to manage the whole game that’ll be better for us.”
