Norcliffe leads way in breaks
Jeremy Ford of Moldgreen Lib had a break of 28, meaning a total of 15 25-plus breaks were recorded.
In the Veterans, Tony Clegg of Marsh Lib C made a break of 34 in a losing effort against Roy Johnson of New Mill A, while Clive Walton of Slaithwaite C&BC recorded a 25 break.
Michael Whaley scored his second century in successive matches as Huddersfield bounced back from defeat by Sheffield II to beat Sheffield III 5-1.
Whaley stepped up to the mark against Joe Markie and, after a few small potting exchanges, a mistake from Markie let Whaley in and he made a break of 101.
He took the next frame comfortably, aided with two breaks of 35.
Martyn Beck continued the winning streak, as he blitzed Dan Bagley in both of his frames, out-potting the youngster.
Joe Priest for Sheffield managed to stop the rot against Jack EllisPownall.
The start of their first frame was scrappy, but after laying an excellent snooker on Ellis-Pownall, Priest took the fifth frame.
However, this didn’t unnerve EllisPownall, as he managed to take out a clearance on the colours to seal the 5-1 victory. HUDDERSFIELD snooker great Robert Read will face 2005 World Champion Shaun Murphy in a nine-frame exhibition match at Lindley Liberal Club on Friday, May 19.
The event will serve as a fundraiser for Kirkwood Hospice, which was one of two charities three-time Masters champion Paul Hunter supported. He passed away in 2006.
Both Read and Murphy were close friends with Hunter and wanted to organise an event in order to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of Hunter’s passing.
They are slightly late, but Read said: “There’s a nice story behind it, coming about with both myself and Shaun being close to Paul.
“We wanted to organise something in his memory and Shaun has agreed to play the exhibition match for free, which is a great gesture.
“We’re also hoping that Paul’s mum and dad will be in attendance for the match.”
He added: “The Paul Hunter Foundation is doing really well and gets regular donations, so we want to help out Kirkwood Hospice and hopefully this exhibition match will help raise some funds.”
Read and Murphy have played each other on a few occasions but never in a competitive nine-frame match such as this one.
There will also be a 10th frame played, with one lucky spectator having the opportunity to go up against Murphy – who is currently ranked sixth in the World Snooker rankings.
The last time Murphy visited Huddersfield he made a maximum break of 147 at Moldgreen Liberal Club.
Standard tickets are £15 while VIP tickets are £25. All tickets must be purchased directly from Lindley Liberal Club.
