Call for statues of gifted legends from our town

- James Hewitt, Princess Diana’s former lover, when asked why rumours persist, which he strongly denies, that he is Prince Harry’s father “My 80th birthday was heaven. The drawing room was full of gorgeous men. I was drunk for a fortnight. So lovely!” IT was so sad to read about the death of runner Derek Ibbotson – he was certainly a credit to Huddersfie­ld.

There are a few other people as well who have achieved and put the town on the map.

In some places I’ve visited I’ve seen statues of people who have made history in their town.

We have one with the great former Prime Minister Harold Wilson but why don’t we look at others like Derek and actor James Mason?

I know we have James Mason Court named after the late film star and had Ibbotson Flats after the great athlete but statues would update visitors to the town about their achievemen­ts and help with the pride of Huddersfie­ld.

And talking of honours, when it comes to knighthood­s why has Mick Jagger become a Sir while Charlie Watts and Keith Richards have been missed?

I remember at school it was EVERY parent of children at Helme School will know that the school has kind of lost its way over the past year or so.

In this context the Ofsted report rating it inadequate is old news. It doesn’t change what the school stands for and the fact that over the years it has turned out some fantastic children who go on to perform at the top of their game in high school.

We have two children at Helme and have spent time talking to the acting headteache­r.

It is clear the plans are well under way to turn this situation around with the support of Ofsted and the local authority.

The last thing the school needs now is an exodus of
