Eggciting times for youngsters in need

CHURCHGOERS are being asked to collect first aid items for families in need.

Each month Lindley Parish Church collects for the Christian African Relief Trust (CART).

Parishioners donate different items to send to various African countries where they are much needed.

Last month they collected school stationery.

This month they are asked to be on the lookout for bandages, plasters, and antiseptic cream with a minimum 12 months best before date to send out to help those in desperate need. Funeral manager Sheila Brodie said: “We hope that the local community will support us and help to make Easter an enjoyable time for these children. “Last year Dignity staff collected thousands of Easter Eggs for children across the country. “We would like to have the opportunity to do the same for children in this area.” To donate an Easter Egg call Highfield Funeral Service on 428243 to arrange a collection. Alternatively, gifts can be dropped off at the home on West Croft between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday. A NEW activity morning aimed at older people has been launched in Oakes.

Residents aged 50-plus are invited to join in the fun at the Friends of Community Activity in Oakes (FOCAL) building next to the Salvation Army Church on New Hey Road.

Sessions take place fortnightly on Thursdays from 10am until noon.

Activities on offer are a pool table, putting, boules, games, cards and a free jigsaw swap.

There is a keyboard for those who want a singsong, and suggestions for other activities are welcomed. It is hoped that a walking group will emerge when the weather improves.

Chair of FOCAL, Christine Stanfield, said: “Since we opened in December 2015, the building has become very busy and we look forward to meeting as many people as we can with the activity morning.

“There is parking and a bus stop outside the building, and the building itself is wheelchair friendly - all are welcome.”

Entry is £1.50 and includes a hot or cold drink and a biscuit.
