THE 125th anniversary of the Drakes Huddersfield Cricket League was celebrated with an excellent lunch.

Representatives of clubs plus current and former league officials gathered at the Cedar Court Hotel to celebrate the occasion – a landmark for Yorkshire’s oldest league.

League president Donald Earnshaw welcomed guests to mark a century and a quarter of marvellous memories.

League chairman Trevor Atkinson gave an address as vice presidents, officers and members of the executive also attended.

Speaking at the event were Philip Radcliffe and comedian Lea Roberts.

Radcliffe is someone who has been totally committed to Yorkshire recreation cricket for very many years.

He has served as a director of the Yorkshire Cricket Board since 2005, has had a long-standing association with junior cricket, being an ex-President of the Joe Lumb Competiton, and is currently Chairman of YCB ACO (Association of Cricket Officials).

With the new season due to start on April 15, it was a timely and fitting reminder of the history of the game in this area.

Six of the inaugural 10 clubs which formed The Huddersfield Cricket League – Armitage Bridge, Golcar, Holmfirth, Lascelles Hall, Linthwaite and Slaithwaite – are still member clubs.

The other four clubs who played in the first league season of 1892 were Cliffe End, Huddersfield United, Lockwood and Meltham Mills.

Over the years, the league has spread from the traditional Huddersfield district and the Colne and Holme Valleys, reaching over the hills to current champions Delph & Dobcross CC, who also hold the All Rounder Sykes Cup and Total Indoor Cricket Solutions T20 Trophy.

To the east, Cawthorne and Hoylandswaine are just across the boundary in South Yorkshire – the latter also being the most southerly club in the competition.

Elland are the most northerly club, while Barkisland are also regular contenders from Calderdale.

Cartworth Moor, back in the league this season, play 1020feet above sea level – believed to be the highest cricketing venue in the North of England.

It was stated by cricket statisticians that by 1991 the Huddersfield area had produced more first class cricketers than any other town or city in England.

A number of local players have come from the Huddersfield League to play in the English County Championship, mainly for Yorkshire, and then have gone on to represent England.

Other county players, and past and future Test Match cricketers, have played for clubs in the Huddersfield Cricket League.

Organisations supporting the anniversary lunch included 2M Press of Milnsbridge, ACS Manufacturing & Supplies, Alfred Reader & Co, All Rounder Cricket, Cedar Court Hotel of Huddersfield, Cobwood Trophies & Engravers, Eaton Smith Solicitors, Fireplace World, Jedi Sports, McTurf Sports Grass, North Light Physiotherapy Associates, R Gledhill Ltd, Simpson Wood Chartered Accountants and Total Indoor Cricket Solutions.
