ENGLAND batsman Haseeb Hameed has avoided a broken hand after being struck by the ball on Sunday.

The 20-year-old was taken for a scan on his left hand after retiring hurt during his opening first-class game of the season for Lancashire.

Hameed, who made an impressive start to his England career during the winter tour of India before injury struck, withdrew after facing 23 balls in his county’s game with Cambridge MCCU.

A statement on Lancashire’s website read: “Opening batsman Haseeb Hameed was struck on his left hand by Cambridge MCCU opening bowler Tim Moses on Day One at Fenner’s. The 20 year-old retired hurt and went for a scan Sunday afternoon.

“Haseeb has been reviewed by the club’s hand specialist this morning and scans have cleared him of any bone damage.

“He will be assessed over the coming days.”

Meanwhile, James Anderson warmed up for his showdown with fellow England record-breaker Alastair Cook later this week with a five-wicket haul.

The first round of Specsavers County Championship matches sees Anderson and Cook, England’s leading Test wicket-taker and run-scorer respectively, face off when the Red Rose travel to Essex in a Division One clash, starting on Friday.

And Anderson had an ideal dress rehearsal by taking five wickets for a miserly 10 runs across 11 overs against Cambridge, who were rolled over for a paltry 62 - 276 runs adrift of Lancashire’s first-innings score.

The 34-year-old, who has been struggling with a shoulder injury for much of the past year, removed both openers and then returned to clean up Nipuna Senaratne - the only man to reach double figures with 31.

Anderson then took two wickets in the space of five balls to wrap up the innings on day two.

Pakistan beat the West Indies by seven wickets to complete a 3-1 victory in their four-match Twenty20 series.
