Rugby’s children’s charity Wooden Spoon has funded the sensory room at Christ Church CE Academy and a “Roktagon” climbing apparatus in the playground.

Joining Eorl and some of the pupils for the official opening were Stuart Watson, Yorkshire region chairman of Wooden Spoon, and Kevin Jones, chairman of the academy’s governors.

Headteacher Lisa Walton-Thorpe said the academy’s 217 pupils, who are aged three to 11, include several with complex physical, mental and emotional needs who are benefiting from the sensory room facilities.

The facilities include a giant beanbag, fibre optics, a bubble tube and a vibroplinth – a piece of equipment that allows youngsters to feel the vibrations as music is played through it.

Lisa said: “We have children in school who need the sensory room on a daily basis and who have complex physical needs.”

She said the Roktagon had been installed to promote physical health. “The children absolutely love it,” she said.

“What we have got from Wooden Spoon are two resources we can expand on and use for a long time to come.”
