Palmes line up new gigs and single launch

Local roundup

HUDDERSFIELD’S own synth-pop trio Palmes, formally known as indie-rock band Pin Stripe Tuesday, are no strangers to the music scene, writes

Forming as PST in 2012 after members Ryan Smith (vocals and guitar) and Callum Taylor (drums) turned their experimenting in Huddersfield New College’s music department into a serious project, the band have worked hard over the years to direct their efforts to produce and perform songs that can only be described as unique and exciting.

The early days of Pin Stripe Tuesday involved recruiting long-term friend Ash Haworth (vocals and bass), leading to three years of showcasing their talents in gigs across the country.

In 2015 when the lead singer left it signalled a change within the band.

Initially starting Palmes as a side project, Smith took on the role of lead singer and the guys started experimenting with new sounds, completely separate to those of PST. At the start of 2016 the decision was made for the band to focus their efforts solely on the new direction they had taken with Palmes and since then the once side project has turned into a great accomplishment.

Though they take no direct influence from other bands, member Callum Taylor has described their sound to be a satisfying combination of bands such as MGMT and Chvrches, a similarity that comes naturally, rather than forced. Having released singles such as All Grey which has received recognition from the likes of BBC Introducing Leeds DJ Alan Raw, the band has pushed hard to make a name for themselves. March saw the release of their new single, El Capitano, and with it a launch party at Parish.

El Capitano is a great example of the talent this band has. It incorporates a new sound, yet has all the right components that make it possible to label this as a successful single. The right components being an easyonthe-ear beat, a catchy chorus, a good mix of vocals and sound, harmonies, and the chance to join in with accompanying oohs during a live set. Palmes are certainly on the right path. It is only a matter of time until hometown gigs turn into nationwide gigs and perhaps even worldwide.

If you want to grab a chance to see Palmes play you can catch them next in Manchester’s Fab Cafe (May 1) and Leeds’ Church (May 11).
