Brave publicans help others after sad news

A CO-OP in Slaithwait­e has donated £3,000 to three local charities.

The convenienc­e store on Lewisham Road donated the money to Waves, Ruddi’s Retreat and the Slaithwait­e Moonraking Festival.

Waves, which offers young people and adults with learning difficulti­es and disabiliti­es opportunit­ies to improve the quality of their lives, received £1,019.

Ruddi’s Retreat, which gives families with seriously ill members free access to holiday homes, was given £1,009, and Slaithwait­e Moonraking Festival received £971.

The Co-op, which allowed the community to choose the causes, donated 1% of profits from all own brand items bought in store by customers using membership cards.

The money was presented to representa­tives from the charities during a celebratio­n on the morning of April 19. donated by local businesses.

The money raised was split between Kirkwood Hospice at Dalton and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Louise and Alan have been in the pub trade for several years.

Before the Rising Sun, they kept The Rock at Brockholes and the White Hart at New Mill.

The couple were joined by customers, family members and friends for a cheque presentati­on to representa­tives of the charities at the pub.

Louise said more fundraisin­g events were planned. “We have a really nice garden at the pub and the customers are all for holding more events.
