top-flight side and then defended it to win by 19 runs.

Their overseas signing, Nazar Hussain, showed why Parish were keen to get him back yet again, the Pakistani first-class player hitting 73 and taking four for 26.

“Naz is a quality performer with both bat and ball, but the most important thing is he’s a really good guy who blends in well with all the lads,” said Orrell.

“The Championship is a fresh challenge for us and there’s a lot more competition – we’ve had to fight hard for our victories so far.

“We are going to find it a bit tougher at times because teams at this level have more strength in depth, whereas often in the lower division you get to numbers seven and eight and you’d expect to wrap it up very quickly.

“At this level, you have to keep the squeeze and keep the pressure on, but we are just aiming to continue with our enthusiasm and build up confidence.

“We are basically a young side and a little bit inexperienced at this level so, sometimes, we are going to make mistakes.

“But we are determined to learn from those mistakes, believe in ourselves and make sure we enjoy the season.”

Orrell and vice-captain Dave Bolt lead the batting order, with new left-handed signing Rashid Yousaf at No3, followed by Dan Broadbent from Birstall and Hussain.

Terence James is explosive in the middle order, Jamie Hardcastle likewise and Dave Blakeley will soon be ready to return after taking time off following becoming a dad.

In the bowling, Hussain, Hardcastle and Yousaf are part of a varied attack spearheaded by Tom Fretwell, who took a hat trick on opening day.

Connor Rowlands, Broadbent and leftarmer Danny Hope all play their part and Dan Padgett is looking to make a return after a back injury.

New keeper is experienced Graeme Richardson from Altofts, who Orrell says is excellent up to the sticks and is helping all the bowlers with their lines and strategy.

“We are all adapting to the slightly higher standard of cricket and that’s good, because we certainly don’t want any complacency,” added Orrell.

“It would have been understandable after the way things have gone for us to imagine it was going to be easy, but there has been none of that and I’m glad to say the lads are working very hard.

“No-one is thinking that we just have to turn up and win. Everyone is gelling and if there comes a time where we lose a couple of games, it will be interesting to see how we bounce back. That’s something we really weren’t tested on last season.”
