LOWER Hopton have lifted the West Riding County Amateur League’s Premier Division champions trophy for the first time in their 49-year history.

The Woodend Road club, who have played 49 consecutive seasons in the league, clinched the title by drawing 1-1 at home to Huddersfield side Newsome FC – with only a point separating the two sides at the top of the table.

The final game for each side was vital and in front of possibly the highest crowd for a level seven League fixture – estimated to be in excess of 350 – both sides gave their all.

Newsome scored through Steven Marshall after 20 minutes to gain the initial advantage, but a second half penalty scored by Anthony Brown gave Hopton the point they needed for the championship title.

Berry Brow have won the Division Two title in the Huddersfield District League after facing a busy end to their campaign.

They played league games on Tuesday and Wednesday before the Barlow Cup final on Friday

Brow gained the two points they needed to go above Linthwaite Athletics at the top of the table.

Brow moved level with their title only rivals with a 4-4 draw against Marsden at home and then ensured their title success with a comfortable 6-0 home win over Scissett.

However, hopes of a ’double’ were dashed as they were beaten the following night 2-0 by Honley at AFC Emley’s Fantastic Media Welfare Ground.

The Huddersfield FA Challenge Cup final, which would normally played at the John Smith’s Stadium but has been moved due Huddersfield Town reaching the Championship play-offs, will now be played at AFC Emley’s Welfare Ground on Friday (7.30pm) between DRAM and Newsome FC.
