Cheshire made a lively start but when the game was held up for nine minutes following a serious head injury to Cheshire open side flanker Mike Craven, they lost that early momentum.

Two successful penalties on 20 minutes gave the Tykes a six-point advantage and was a just reward for their lively backs – Irvine scoring both.

However, the Cheshire pack were gaining the upper hand in the scrummages and Jack Lavin’s penalty on the stroke of half time halved the deficit at the interval.

Yorkshire extended their lead five minutes into the second half when Irvine made a decisive break, with full back Pete Swatkins coming into the line at pace to put Simon Frewin in on the right corner – Irvine converted to lead 13-3.

Cheshire were back in it when their fly half Rhys Hayes chipped the ball through to gather and score on 53 minutes. Lavin converted (13-10).

The game looked to have been made safe by Yorkshire following another Irvine penalty and an unconverted try by Lewis Minikin on 72 minutes (21-10).

With Cheshire pressing and time almost up, they contrived to knock on and see the ball hoofed massively over their attacking formation and Yorkshire wing James Broadley latched onto the loose ball in the in-goal area to score the final touchdown.
