in the BMW PGA Championship – his first time in the big event at Wentworth.

The 31-year-old was up against it having shot a five-over-par 77 in the opening round on Thursday.

Yesterday, the Woodsome Hall man improved but not enough.

There was agony for Outlane golfer Jarrad Hazelden as the chance of setting a new course record slipped away.

Playing in the Douglas Clark Cup on his home course, Hazelden stood on the 18th tee knowing a birdie score would give him the course record.

Unfortunately nerves got the better of him and he said: “I was so nervous I could hardly hold the club.”

His drive settled against a tree just yards from the tee, but Hazelden rescued the situation with iron shots which put him back on the fairway and, eventually, he reached the green only for his putt to equal the course record to lip out to give him a bogie, and he finished with a gross 68 which was one over the course best.

This score, amazingly, did not win the Douglas Clark Cup as Kevan Sykes took the honours with a 64 nett score, with 14 pars, which was two shots better than Hazelden’s 66 nett – which included four birdies and an eagle.

Crow Nest Park Ladies staged their Jubilee Trophy with Carole Hampson being the winner.

Hampson, who has a handicap of 13, won the trophy – donated by past member Stephen Cockcroft in 2002 to commemorate the Queens Golden Jubilee Year – with a nett 73.

In second place was past lady captain and this year’s lady vicecaptain Barbara Horrocks with a nett score of 80 from a 15 handicap, and third place went to past lady captain Janet Longbottom with a nett 81 from a handicap of 23 on countback.

Huddersfield golfer Dan Konyk has qualified for the final of the American Golf UK Long Drive Championship.

Konyk produced a huge drive of 401 yards in the Under 45 category regional qualifier.

The achievement leaves the long drive veteran just one step away from reclaiming the national title he won in 2015 and a place in the World Championships in the USA.

Konyk, who is owner of the Woodlands Driving Range in Barnsley, was one of over 5,000 budding long drivers who entered the event that is run by nationwide golf retailer American Golf and he now heads to the final to be staged at Heythrop Park in Oxfordshire on August 4.

There he will battle it out for the title and the only UK Under 45 qualifying spot for the World Championships in Oklahoma.
