Old boys aiming to create Cup stunner

-

in the last round as Shelley knocked off Elland’s 265-6 for the loss of just one wicket.

Sykes’ brother Joe (also exScholes) finished 51 not out in that match while the final former Chapelgate man in the Shelley lineup, Nick Sharp, was not out 25 in their latest win against Linthwaite and has scored 341 runs so far at a healthy average of 85.25.

Louis Sykes is top run-scorer in the Championship so far with 409 at 58.43, while Joe has scored 335 at 55.83.

Their run-scoring will give Scholes plenty to think about, although James Noble’s side – fifthbottom of the top flight after a slow start – are fresh from inflicting a first defeat of the campaign on joint leaders Hoylandswaine.

Scholes have former West Indies opening bat Devon Smith settling in nicely and Yorkshire Academy player Ben Birkhead in form after his 94 at Haigh Lane.

On the bowling front, Scholes can counter the Shelley order with the Brook brothers – who have taken 59 wickets between them so far.

Openers Tom and Louis Brook have 20 wickets apiece, while Josh has taken 19.

Three other teams from outside the top flight will be looking to cause upsets.

Cedar Court Conference leaders Lepton travel to Skelmanthorpe hoping Imran Khan and Sajid Bashir can add to their 19 and 18 wickets respectively and that Asif Hussain can maintain the form which has made him the secondtop runscorer in the Drakes (542 runsat 135.50).

Championship bottom side Lascelles Hall look to have a task on their hands at Hoylandswaine, while Clayton West – also from the second tier – might fancy their chances of giving Armitage Bridge a fright, especially with Kiwi’s Kyle Hitchman (Clayton) and Jaycob Curtling (Armitage Bridge) going head to head.

Cup holders Delph – at home to Cawthorne in tomorrow’s league programme – entertain Thongsbridge in the second round with opening bat Mosun Hussain the top run-getter in the league, having fired 703 at an average of 100.43.

There’s a Colne Valley derby in the Cup as Golcar host Broad Oak while there are two other all-Premiership ties with Moorlands at home to Honley and Kirkburton taking on Shepley. LASCELLES Hall looked after the Huddersfield Joe Lumb Cup team in superb style, but the result did not go as everyone would have wished.

Bradford ran out winners by 47 runs at Highfield Lane, meaning the Huddersfield Under 17s face a must-win clash next against Barnsley at Cawthorne.

Opener Wainwright was the anchor for Bradford, scoring 60 off 57 deliveries, including nine fours and a six.

Noble hit 26 and Ahmed 17, but the top order were all removed by Thongsbridge’s Will Reeves, who finished with four for 49 from his 15 overs, and then Almondbury Wesleyan’s Ben Shufflebotham ran through the middle order to restrict the visitors.

Shufflebotham also finished with four wickets at a cost of 37 from 15 overs, and with Musa Ahmed claiming two for four from 2.4 overs to wrap things up, Huddersfield were in with a good chance at tea.

Skipper Jacob Mulhall opened the batting for Huddersfield and set a platform with 29 from 57 deliveries, with six fours to his name.

But the middle order just couldn’t get going until Holmbridge’s Joe Clough at No6 responded with 48, which included 10 boundaries and came off 66 balls.

Unfortunately no-one could stay with him, even though Shufflebotham dug in for 13 near the end and, when the final wicket fell in the 38th over, Huddersfield were short with 120 on the board.

Manager Roger Peaker said: “Lascelles Hall really welcomed us and looked after us and we are very grateful to John Booth and all the team up there for the way they put on the game.

“Our next match is against Barnsley at Cawthorne, which we have to treat as a must-win.” Wainwright C Auty W Reeves ..........................................................................
