FIREFIGHTERS had to clamber onto a factory roof after sparks from machinery were found smouldering in the roof beams.

Fire crews were called to the premises at the Anchor Mill industrial estate on Thornhill Road, Dewsbury, on Monday morning.

Sparks from work at the engineering company had flown into tresses above days earlier and had been “smouldering for quite a while”, according to firefighters.

Crews from Dewsbury, Mirfield, Ossett and Wakefield fire stations attended the scene after they were called at 9am.

Watch commander at Dewsbury Anthony Woodhead said the fire flared up after staff opened up the roof area to tackle it, exposing it to oxygen.

“We got there quickly and it was only a relatively small fire but it could have been more serious if we hadn’t attended straight away.” uncomfortable and tried to get away from him.

“As she looked down at her phone he punched her to the right side of her face.”

Kirklees Magistrates’ Court in Huddersfield heard that the attack was unprovoked and she did not know him. The student and her friend fled to a nearby shop and police were called.

Rachel Sharpe, mitigating, said her client was alcohol dependant: “He fully accepts punching the girl to the face. Thankfully he didn’t cause any damage although the victim was clearly vulnerable because of her age.”

Magistrates made a 12-month community order with 25 days of rehabilitation activities. Singh must pay £85 costs and £85 victim surcharge.
