Food bank to help more after award

-

HUDDERSFIELD food bank, The Welcome Centre, which helps hundreds of needy people, is to receive a major award.

The centre on Lord Street in the town centre provides practical, shortterm support to help people who are in crisis.

It offers basic essentials such as food, toiletries, household items and bedding, as well as friendly advice about where to get further help.

Now it is to receive a Weston Charity Award which means it will get funding and strategic support aimed at helping it reach even more people across the region.

Director of the Garfield Weston Foundation, Philippa Charles, said: “We are living through a period of unprecedented change. It is, quite literally, a case of adapt or die. This is why the Weston Charity Awards help charities become stronger, more effective and fit for the future.”

Centre manager, Ellie Pearson, said: “People are in real need in our community. Every week families are going hungry because they can’t make ends meet. The Welcome Centre is incredibly honoured to have been selected to take part in this prestigious project.”

The centre will receive support from a team of senior business leaders through the charity, Pilotlight, which has been connecting the business and charitable worlds for over 10 years, to make both more effective.
