Wareing, 20, defeated new Yorkshire county player Josh Brown 21-5 in the showpiece at Slaithwaite, which was sponsored by Lynne Sykes of Stick Fingers Childcare.

The Meltham player – formerly with Penistone – played impressively throughout the one-day event to pick up £160 and was taken to double figures only twice in the oneday competition, by Moldgreen’s Jason Grundy (21-16) and by Linthwaite’s Mick Armitage in the semifinals (21-15).

“It’s the best I’ve bowled all season and I’m chuffed to bits to win it,” said Wareing, who works as a butcher in Stocksbridge.

“I played so well in qualifying at Linthwaite, winning to four and seven, that I was wishing the final was there.

“But when I got up to Slaithwaite I just carried on bowling well, and I played out of my skin really.”

When he received his first major Huddersfield trophy, Wareing had no doubts who to thank.

“It’s the furthest I’ve ever been in a competition like the Summer Handicap, I’ve not been past the semifinals before,” he explained.

“I told my mate that if I won it was for my great-grandad who passed away a couple of years ago.
