Great tribute

played at Penistone BC, and he always told me never to give up.

“He used to say if you are all-but one down, never give up, always keep going to the end – and I took that into this first final I’ve ever been in.”

While he was playing really well, Wareing was surprised his scratch final opponent from Kirkheaton Con, who collected £80, couldn’t put him under more pressure.

“I thought Josh would be my toughest match but, as it turned out, that was probably in the semis against Mick Armitage.

“I was 15-13 down in that match and I couldn’t get off some long marks. But I had a bit of luck and once I got back in I managed to run out.

“In the final, I managed to get Josh on a mark across the green – one I used throughout the day – and he couldn’t find it.

“He was either too short or too far and I was leading quite well. I had a bit of luck along the way, but I was really pleased with how I was playing. In the end I won quite comfortably and I was delighted, because I had thought it would be my toughest match.”

Wareing is now considering his competition entries for the rest of the summer but hopes the win will help him cement a place at his new club.

He explained: “I am just in my first season at Meltham, having joined from Penistone, and I’m getting my head down and trying to keep my place in the Tuesday night team in the Mirfield League.

“We’re in Division Two and I’m trying to do my best.

“I beat our captain, Richard Walker, in the quarter-finals at Slaithwaite, so I’m hoping he thinks I did well and that he needs to keep me in the team!”
