And it was an experience he enjoyed.

“I had never been to Australia and it was a great experience for me,” said McGillvary.

“It took me about four days to acclimatis­e and get over the jet lag, by the time I had we were pretty much getting on the plane back home.

“It was great and there really is a different environmen­t out there.

“The crowds are different and the people are great, and what with the fantastic weather, I was so glad that I was picked for the trip – it was an experience I will never forget.”

And McGillvary thinks a better balance can be struck between domestic and internatio­nal fixtures to increase the profile of rugby league on the world’s sporting stage.

“I think these types of games are important for rugby league on an internatio­nal level.

“That is not just for ourselves, but for the likes of Samoa who we played, and even for Australia and New Zealand.

“I honestly think the people running the game should look at break for internatio­nals during the regular season.

“From an England point of view we should be aiming to create a scenario where we are playing top internatio­nal matches on a regular basis.

“You look at rugby union and the emphasis is on the internatio­nal competitio­ns.

“What with the Six Nations and other big tournament­s the focus is on internatio­nal games and I feel that rugby league need to do more on the internatio­nal level.

“I don’t really agree with the way the Super League season is set up and how we do things now, the current system needs to
