A VINTAGE tea party at Ravensknowle Park, Dalton, was staged to mark national National Carers Week.

The event included Tai Chi in the park, arts and crafts demonstrations and cakes made by Kirkwood Hospice volunteers.

The tea party was open to carers and people wanting to find out more about the services of Huddersfield-based information and advice service Carers Count.

Other activities included drop-in sessions at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and Dewsbury and District Hospital, an information stand at Sainsbury’s in Market Street, Huddersfield.

A charity fashion show at PPG Canalside, Leeds Road, was also organised by Carers Count and the Carers Trust. Maureen Connor, service manager at Carers Count, based at Upperhead Row, Huddersfield, said: “As many as three in four people provide unpaid care and support to family members, friends and neighbours.

“Without this support, people would rely much more on social care and health services and would be much more socially isolated.” Service managers at Carers Count, Heather Ellis (left) and Maureen Connor (right) serve tea to their guests at a vintage tea party at the Tolson Museum appearing on the BBC programme ‘Our Dancing Town.’

There is also to be an exhibition, Argentine Tango and two mini-dance competitions that all ticket holders will have chance to take part in. A barn dance and a Bossa Nova will be taught on the day.

Organisers, Julie and Martyn Dean, members of South Crosland Church, have been ballroom dancing for over a decade and are also volunteers for Kirklees’ Shall We Dance? which offers dance lessons and tea dances in the community.

The stories of the dances for the competition are set to a bible overview covering Genesis to Revelation.

Tickets are still available for the 2pm event.
