Extra incentive for Shield semi-finalists

-

THE Fired Up Paddock Shield final will be at Kirkburton or Scholes – depending on who wins Sunday’s semi-final between the two.

Edgerton & Dalton first team are already through to the second XI knockout showpiece after defeating Holmfirth in the first semi-final.

But as they are only Associate Members of the Drakes League, they will not be allowed to stage the final on Sunday, August 13.

Riley Lane or Chapelgate will have that distinction depending on who wins an eagerly-awaited semi between second-placed Premiership Two club Kirkburton and seventhplaced Scholes, who won a dramatic Crowther Cup semi-final against Wrenthorpe to reach the last four of that competition as well (they host Woodlands in the semis).

Kirkburton are also through in the Crowther and will travel to New Farnley for a place in the final.

Charles Beever of Denby provided the second XI performance of the week, taking eight for seven as Nortonthorpe nine-man Nortonthorpe were dismissed for just 24 in Cedar Court Conference Two.

So he had all the available wickets in his six overs (four maidens) as his side sealed a seven-wicket win.

Among the batsmen, Harry Edmonds hit 124 not out as Meltham beat Birkby Rose Hill in Jedi Sports Championship Two and, in Premiership Two, Stuart Rank of Clayton West hit 119 not out to set up a 17-run win over Kirkburton. *Barkisland B /0pnts/ 78ao (I.Saboor 6-11) Armitage Bridge B /6pnts/ 82-0 (C.Dimbylow 27*, P.Hamer 55*). ENGLAND qualified for the Women’s World Cup semi-finals with a 75-run win over New Zealand at Derby, where Natalie Sciver hit a second century of the tournament.

Sciver’s 129, and 93 from fourth-wicket partner Tammy Beaumont, helped England recover from 52-3 to set a victory target of 285.

Once New Zealand captain Suzie Bates was out for 44 and Amy Satterthwaite for 35, the lower order never looked like salvaging a positive result despite a determined unbeaten 43 from Katie Perkins as three wickets from Alex Hartley helped seal victory.

England move top of the table above Australia on run-rate ahead of their final group match against the West Indies in Bristol on Saturday.

New Zealand must now beat India, also at Derby, to join England, Australia and South Africa in the last four.

England captain Heather Knight said on Sky Sports: “We were really under pressure and it was hard work, so I am really pleased how the girls went about it to secure that semifinal spot.

“We have got one (group) game to go now on Saturday, so we would love to continue the winning habit at Bristol and will try to play the best team we can.” ■■Yorkshire visit Lancashire tomorrow in the T20 Blast after their match at Northants was rained off.
