At the Junior School bowling final at Lindley BC. Front Rosie Noble, Moorlands School captain, Clr Cahal Burke and Owen Howarth, captain of Lindley Junior ORGANISERS are hoping to make an annual event of a new junior schools’ bowling competition at Lindley BC.

Year 6 pupils from Moorlands Primary and Lindley Junior have been taking part in fun Friday afternoon bowling sessions at the Daisy Lea Lane club.

They’ve been thoroughly enjoying the experience of getting involved in the sport and, when they played each other for a new cup, it was Moorlands who came out on top.

The plan now is to expand the involvement, possibly with Reinwood Junior, and keep the Cup competition going.

“Lindley BC are trying to get as many people involved from the local community as possible and the youngsters are really enjoying it,” said Lorna Briggs.

“We’ve had as many as 57 coming to the Friday afternoon sessions and 27 took part in the ‘cup final’, when they were not just bowling, but also learning to score and measure.

“The Friday sessions run from 3.30pm to 5pm and have been great fun.

“But any youngsters between the ages of eight and 12 are welcome to come along and have a go at playing.

“We can show them how to play, we have bouhgt junior bowls for them to use and we’d like to encourage as many as possible to play – because it’s a great sport, it doesn’t matter how big or small you are and it’s something you can do for a lifetime.” ■■Entries are wanted for The Frank and Jean Wrathall sponsored Wrathall Trophy, Under 18 mixed singles handicap.

It’s at Brockholes BC on Friday, July 28 (9.45am scratch, 10am start), drawn on day.

Sponsored by Bluebird Care Kirklees, Huddersfield played well in the Yorkshire Vets one-day competition which was hosted by Leeds and featured eight districts.

Huddersfield beat Leeds at Scholes BC in their first match, winning it 235194.

In the semi-finals they toppled Sheffield 220-211 at Tadcaster No1, which meant a final showdown against Bradford, who beat them by a big margin in 2016.

This time, at Magnet BC, Huddersfield still lost, but the scoreline was 211-197.

Paul Hillam, the Bradford captain, was presented with the Hickson Trophy and the first prize of £200, while Huddersfield captain Frank Greenwood received the runners-up cheque for £100, both presented by a former Leeds President, Cedric Briggs, who was present at all the Huddersfield matches.

Cedric thanked all the Leeds District clubs hosting matches and their officials involved in organising the event, and went on to say he had enjoyed some excellent bowling.

He congratulated both teams on reaching the final, on this occasion Bradford were the better team on the day.
