Prince George of Cambridge, 4. HOW many more pieces of land, some used as allotments, will be taken up for houses, effectively kicking the old boys into touch.

It is not just a question of moving someone off and transporting them on to another allotment plot.

To the council it’s just another piece of land but to those who have spent years tending a plot it is a way of life and a wonderful pastime to pursue their hobby.

Allotments were vital during the war years to keep some of Britain’s food supply going.

Many of the allotments are dug up from scratch - it requires hard work to achieve what you see now.

Britain is a nation of gardeners, we have it in our blood and that is why finding a space to grow what you desire and tending a plot in all weathers is a passion. Kicking people off them is an injustice. remuneration of popular entertainers, whose programmes are no doubt marketed by the Corporation at a profit.

What is hard to stomach is the proportion of my licence fee being spent on mere newsreaders when surely such “talent” can be sourced cheaply from regional programmes.

Even better, with Brexit in prospect, the BBC should look to recruit more broadcasters from our former colonies in the West Indies where wages may be low but the standards of literacy and spoken language I WAS saddened to read in last week’s Examiner that the Community Spirit Shop in Slaithwaite is to close.

The Huddersfield Epilepsy Group has received generous donations which have helped to continue the work of our group and has been such an encouragement to us.

It is sad that there are very few younger people who are prepared to give up their time to support groups like this.

On behalf of the group and all those who have benefited from the shop’s hard work, I send thanks. I wish every person who has worked in the shop good wishes and maybe they can put their feet up and have a well earned rest.
