HONLEY’S FANTASTIC

-

THERE is always something going on in Honley but one upcoming events that you really shouldn’t miss is the Honley Feast.

The festival dates back to the 1800s and in its heyday a travelling menagerie of elephants, camels and horses used to arrive from Wombwell, near Barnsley, with jesters, strolling players, singing, dancing, and children’s games keeping the crowds entertained.

The event became a traditional week-long holiday attracting thousands of people from all over. But as travel became easier and cheaper people opted to go off to the seaside instead, so in recent years the festival had dramatically dropped in popularity.

But then, last year, the Honley Business Association (HBA) decided to revive the legendary feast, scheduling it for the time of year when it was traditionally held. And while it may not have reached the heights of the elephant days of the 19th century, it was still a huge success with more than 3,000 people attending.

Highlights were a vintage vehicle parade through the village and the Big Sing, led by Hope Bank Community Choir, Honley Male Voice Choir and the Yorkshire Traction Honley Band - where everyone joined in an Abba medley and then finished off with a rousing Land of Hope and Glory.

This year’s Honely Feast, taking place on September 16, looks set to top last year’s, promising to be the perfect summer ending event. The celebration will run from 10am to 6pm and already has an impressive line-up of confirmed activities and attractions.

Planned to keep the whole family happy, entertainment includes:‘builda-go kart’, whether you want to build something fast and enter the speed competition or just make something that looks cool; Big Sing at 3pm when local choirs will be joined by an accordion band and a jazz quartet; and more entertainment all day long with local artists. More events are to be announced so keep watch for more information.
