The long and short of it! Mayvah’s charity boost

-

ENTHUSIASTIC pupils took part in a pilot first aid course for primary schools.

The Basic Life Support course at Lepton C of E Junior School included instruction in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

The event was in preparation for national Start a Heart day on October 17.

It was run by first aid instructor Mick Brennan, manager of Huddersfield firm EP Risk Consultancy.

He said: “We hope other schools will follow and appreciate the advantages of teaching young people basic life support skills.

“Unfortunately, only a handful of schools actually teach CPR at primary school level.”

Corrina Aston, whose daughter took part at Lepton, said: “It is brilliant that EP Risk are doing this, as we never know when the skills they acquire will be put into practice and used for real.

“Only recently a five-year-old boy was in the news for saving his baby brother from choking by using the skills he had received at school.” said: “We came across The Little Princess Trust and talked about what it would mean to someone if she donated her hair – her hair being all the way down to her waist and her absolute pride and joy. She had only ever had it trimmed once a few years ago.

“She thought about it and decided it would be an amazing thing to do. Since then she has donated her toys, taken part in the Race For Life earlier this month and has now donated her hair. This was a very difficult decision for her and she was very nervous prior to the cut which took place in school.”

Mayvah’s school, Lepton C E (VC) Junior, Infant & Nursery School, also joined in the fundraising.

There was also a crazy hair day in the school and pupils brought in a £1 donation to support what Mayvah was doing.

In total the school raised £190 for the Little Princess Trust.

Karmjeet added: “Some of Mayvah’s friends at school have said they would love to donate their hair and raise funds for The Little Princess Trust too and this is down to the support the staff, parents and pupils of Lepton school have given to this cause.” Mayvah proves she is a cut above the rest to help Cristiano (centre).
