Ale trail could learn from the ‘booze and food fest’

Princess Beatrice of York, roger Kinder shared this picture with us on Twitter, saying: “Filming Huddersfield Food and drink Festival - last shot of the weekend. What would Harold think!” HAVING been born and raised in Marsden by parents who worked hard all their lives in the now neglected and abandoned textile mills of the Colne Valley I believe the emergence of the tourist industry in the area, including the much criticised Ale Trail, should be encouraged.

The income generated leading to the possible regeneration of the valley has to be seen as a positive development. There is no point waiting for national or local government to invest in the area, the Colne Valley always has been the ‘poor relation.’

Surely the businesses benefiting from their increased turnover can see the opportunities and should play a part in helping to manage and control the situation for the benefit of all the residents.

I have just returned from the popular and much publicised Booze and Food festival where thousands of people are given the opportunity to drink all day and have the occasional snack in St George’s Square which quite rightly will be seen as another great success.

The difference between the Ale Trail and the Booze Fest as far as I am aware is that one event is marketed and organised by a group (Huddersfield Live). It has decent portable toilets (supplied by a Slaithwaite based company) has a team of visible helpers and a selection of ‘posh’ food tents.

It must make more sense to take control and market and manage the Ale Trail to help everyone concerned.

If it was, perhaps even the occasional sight of an inflatable doll could be forgiven. THE gambling adverts on TV only show winners, never losers, the answer being of course there are losers, that’s gambling, you lost so what, you knew that when you took the bet.

You bought a car, the salesman or woman didn’t tell you that it might break down, you knew that cars break down, so it broke down. You took the gamble and you lost.

Your house is rewired and burns down. Houses burn down as a result of electrical faults, you knew it could happen, you took the gamble, you lost.

Your energy bills are going through the roof. Theresa May said this wasn’t going to happen, you took the gamble and you lost.

Thatcher used the excuse that inflation was caused by excessive wage claims so she had to “Sort out the unions” – a metaphor for taking away worker’s rights. We now have a workforce with little or no rights but we still have inflation outstripping wages and savings. You knew that could happen when you voted Tory.

You took the gamble and we all lost. THE Government has broken its promise to fix train services in the north of England.

In the same week the government promised billions to improve train services in London. For years the government has pumped money into transport in London, while people in the north have been left with slow services and uncomfortable journeys.

I don’t begrudge people living in London having fast, reliable trains. It’s about investment being shared fairly around the country and us all having a decent transport system, wherever we live.
