India whitewash

UPPER Hopton CC will stage the 70th Crossley Shield final for the Spenser Wilson Halifax League on Sunday.

Triangle play Warley in the second XI knockout final, which is supported by the Rotary Club of Sowerby Bridge, and it is no ordinary showpiece.

Warley have won the Shield for the last three years and are going for a unique four-timer.

Triangle, however, will have different ideas, having won the trophy on eight occasions, the last in 2009.

Whatever happens, it will be a record ninth victory for either club.

There was a first tie of the season in the Spenser Wilson Halifax League when Leymoor visited Outlane.

Outlane batted first and scored 161, with Adam Davies (85) scoring over half of those, as four Leymoor bowlers shared the wickets.

The visitors’ runs were spread more evenly, Martin Allison top scoring with 57, but wickets fell gradually and last man Colin Johnson was bowled with the scores level.

Birchencliffe, currently playing out of Bradley & Colne, seem to be enjoying their nomadic existence and chalked another win, this time against Mount, to keep away from the lower reaches of the Second Division table.

RAVICHANDRAN Ashwin and Mo Shami combined to skittle Sri Lanka on the third day of the final Test as India wrapped up a 3-0 whitewash in Kandy.

The hosts started the day following on at 19-1 and mustered only token resistance as they finished all out for 181, defeated by an innings and 171 runs.

Ashwin pocketed four for 68 as he held down an end, with Shami chiming in with three for 32.

Sri Lanka looked set for an even heftier defeat when an early clatter of wickets left them 39-4. What followed was a slight upturn as Dinesh Chandimal (36) and Angelo Mathews (35) dug in.
