WINS IN BOTH MATCHES AS ENGLAND POWER IN

regional squads: Kirby and Kennedy, both from Stoke Park, Buckingham­shire, are in the Thames Valley squad; Fixby’s Heath is in the Yorkshire squad and Whitehead, from Kendal, Cumbria, is in the North squad.

Kirby and Whitehead won their foursomes on the 19th – after their opponents holed out for eagle on the 18th to take the match on. Heath and Kennedy won 3&2. The singles wins were scored by Whitehead 2&1, Heath 3&2 and Kennedy 3&1, while Kirby lost only on the last.

Whitehead and Kennedy both got up early on, while Heath found her putting touch on the back nine to ensure victory and Kirby battled hard to take her game the distance.

Home members won both divisions of the Huddersfie­ld Wednesday Golfing Society match at Longley Park.

First Division winner was Steve Tann (34 points off 13 handicap), ahead of second-placed Mick Carr (Meltham, 33 off 6).

Carr beat Chris Holmes (also Meltham) on the back nine with the same score.

Second Division winner was John Thompson (the Longley Park Captain) with 36 points off 19.

David Crowther (Outlane) was second with 35 off 22, beating Peter Boakes (also Outlane) on the back nine.

Nearest the pin on the 18th (par 3) was Brendan Barrett.

The next meeting is on August 30 at Meltham.
